Career challenges

Are you pursuing a career or thinking to choose one?

At some point its good to ask yourself next questions:
– The country I live gives me enough opportunities to grow to the maximum career level I want?
– Do I have a career or a job? I understand the differences?
– If I go to my work and I can’t expect the hour to get out of there, then I may think I have a job. If I am dreaming and in my dreams, I find solutions to my daily challenges, then that could be a career. 🙂
– How many biographies did you read?
– Who are your mentors? Digital and real ones?
– What challenges do you face on time and people management?
– Do you understand that any technical skills can be learned and leadership skills should be practiced with care and empathy?
– People go first; it’s a statement that needs to be in front of all the challenges.
– We rely on the team, and we face all the problems together.
– In the end, if our project doesn’t make money, then we should revise all our strategies and start another project.

Hackathon Media

So, I was this weekend to a media hackathon by invitation of a new friend Emil. It isn’t my first participation in such kind of events, but I gave it a try. I can start with the fact that the focus of the hackathon was on media and how to stop propaganda and fake/false news.

Thinking to local media results and the general situation in this informational niche I feel that we need more than that, but let’s be thankful for the small things that happen to us.

I was surprised that at this kind of events we had less good tech professionals than generalist or non-experienced at least in the business sphere. If we will take a look at the definition of the word;
”Hackathon – an event, typically lasting several days, in which a large number of people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming. or “a series of 48-hour hackathons to build new web and mobile services.”

My question is, why we did minimal programming? I think at least we need to discuss how to build our ideas and projects from the programming part, to have a plan and to know in which direction to work. Why do not bring more tech people and let them give us a tech solution to our ideas? Maybe this could work for the next events.

The overall impression is good because at this events we can meet people and share knowledge. I did practice my design skills and business thinking. We don’t know why, but our idea didn’t win, and we didn’t receive any appropriate feedback why. For the next events, I think its good to give the participants a feedback form where they can read constructive feedback on their projects. In this way, we can understand what to avoid next time and the solutions of the mentors.

My lesson is that its way much productive to generate ideas and to make them work before participating in this kind of events. Its easier to present a product that was tested and has a working business model. Make a plan, start research, do some testing and act until you create a product that helps someone and can be sustainable.

Real entrepreneurs

Real entrepreneurs are those that build the healthy relationship with their team.

No one in the world can run a successful long-term company without trusted colleagues. In Moldova, we know a lot of ”self-claimed” entrepreneurs that don’t give a shit on people and stakeholders they work. They think that if you have a profit at the end of the month that it’s essential that you can have. If you collect your salary, it doesn’t matter what salary receive your colleagues. The bad experience from Sovietic times taught the people that someone needs to work for you for a penny. Instead, you should grab everything you can and live your life as you want.

My opinion is that the strategy will not work for an extended period. The history confirmed this fact.

Being close and right to your people can give you a chance to build a reputation, a relationship, and a legacy that will last a long time.

Real entrepreneurs are those that care enough to understand that their lives are the same as the employees they hire. It’s easy to hire a right specialist, but its harder to make him stay and care about your product and the work he does.

When you think the next time to open a business or to become an entrepreneur, think twice, can you build relationships that will last?

Errors of 2017

2017 was a long year for me. I quit my job after I hated doing marketing. I started learning design. Tried me in a new domain, as a business trainer. 10 months later I still have good results. For few months I was a freelancer working from home. My girlfriend was complaining that I will become a home guy. 😀 I get a new job in a tech company and fall in love again with marketing because of a great team. I pursue my dreams and push me thinking about how to plan time more efficiently. I did a lot of mistakes but finally, all of them have brought me where I’m now. Doing marketing, design, teaching, and coaching, trying to write more often on my blog. I have a few more projects to come, but I need 2 or 3 months to realize them.

Some of biggest errors are:

  • I was afraid to quit my job.
  • Because of a bad team, I started to hate what I did.
  • I failed to plan my time efficiently when I had a lot of it.
  • I trained few times even if I had a lot of free time.
  • I failed to remember that motivation is an intrinsic force.
  • I failed to speak up what I want and what I thought.
  • I read few books.
  • I lost myself because of too many critics of my ex-bosses. Even a good professional can become a poor performer if his boss tells him consistently that he isn’t good enough.
  • I forgot to celebrate myself and my small successes.

I will not complain I learned a lot from my mistakes and I’m grateful to the people that pushed me and made me grown up. Many thanks to everyone.
